Yes, notice each one doubles in size

256 Mb
512 Mb
1024 Mb = 1 Gb = 1 Gig

1 Gig actually = 1000 mb but they round the 1024 down to 1 Gig

Yep 1024mb = 1GB

Its because pesky computers do everything in 8s.

You will notice multiples of the number 8 all over the place in computing.

Ram for example used to be 128mb, then 256mb then 512mb then 1GB because people cant be bothered to say 1024mb

Ram and cache are totally different things by the way, but I dont have a good enough knowledge of cache to explain it

when they talk about 1GB RAM they actually mean 1024mb RAM. this is because RAM doubles e.g from 128-256-512-1024(1GB)-2048(2GB)
cache memory is different from RAM. it is temporary memory that the CPU uses to store regularly used programs so the more the cache the faster your programs will open.
for how you plan to use your comp. 1Gb ram and 8mb cache is more than enough.
If you are using windows vista though you might need 2Gb RAM.

correct...works that way with all units...ex 1024 kb = 1 mb....until u get to bytes...then its 1 byte = 8 bits....and yeah it's good for that and u can do gaming (most RAM over 512 can)
