It depends on the wood. Pine, which is a soft wood, dries quickly and can be burned in six to eight months if it's been cut to 4-5 inch wide logs. Pine also presents one of the greatest sources of creosote--the substance that builds up in the chimney and causes fires. Harder woods take longer to dry--perhaps as long as a year, if properly cut.

After being cut and split, green wood needs at least 6 - 8 months minimum. 1 - 2 years is best. Dead wood can be cut and burned right away, unless it's soaked with water.

never burn pine!...it leaves so much nasty gunk on the inside of your chimney!!!!................ other woods, like oak, cherry, hickory, etc need six months to a year at LEAST before it's good for in a stove.... smaller splits dry faster, so those are in the six month bunch and larger splits in the year bunch.... agree about dead wood....

at least a year unless it is dry dead wood then it can be burned right away . make sure your chimney is clean
