Yes I have been there or thru there about 5 times. Last time I was over that way I got married ..in Gatlinburg at a little wedding chapel hid away in the mountains and stayed in a honeymoon cabin with a view out the sliding glass doors of the snow covered mountains. I do not particularly care for Gatlinburg itself but I do love the mountains. We drove to Cherokee NC while we were there and visited the Cherokee museum. My hubby and I are both part Cherokee.

I did in the late 70's as a little kid during a camping trip in Sept. [boy was it cold at night, whew!!] but it was AWESOME~Just gorgeous as well as gorgeous looking Indian men there as well ;--D
Plus we saw a mamma bear w/three baby cubs, however one of the nights sleeping in our tent heard a woman scream, lol. But the only thing that happened was some bear had broken into our metal ice chest, as we saw the next morning. Anyhow, rolling up our jeans, wading in the smokey mountain river, wearing our Father's 'white sailor hats'--my sister I did, are good memories to treasure. It was a very memorable trip and collected many shiney silver looking rocks from the river, and snacking on maple syrup candies.
Thanks for this question, you've brought some good childhood memories back :o)

Live in the foothills of them, the Blue Ridge. Traveled through them many childhood weekends. Yes, they do seem to be smoking, so low as the clouds often touch. Both ranges are gorgeous, and the Appalachian chain, of which they're both part, is the oldest in the world. One of the headwater rivers here has a waterfall with steep banks you can ease down, and magnificent boulders where you can sit and be sprayed with the waterfall's mist. A tremendous sanctuary.

This is the first autumn in a long time that I have ever missed seeing the leaves change color in the Smokies.
I have missed that. This year, it wasn't meant to be.
My male friend and I were getting ready to buy a souvenir shop and little log house there. But, sadly, he died of cancer this past May, and the dream won't be coming true.
The Smokies are the prettiest spot on earth to me.

Yes. They're breath-taking aren't they. If you have a chance, go in the fall. There are several companies that rent cabins and chalets. There's lots to do there too. It's just such a beautiful, peaceful place. Take a hike thru the national park too. Just beautiful.

I will share a cute story with you. Marie my closest frined acquired Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme disease. When we went to another doctors appointmen, she told the doctor she had Smokey Mountain Fever, because, we don't live near the Rockies she told the doc. Ahh, she is creative!

The Smokies are beautiful. Many years ago we drove thru there on the way to Cape Hatteras, NC. But, you can have Pigeon Forge, too crowded/tacky. Reminds me of Branson,MO, and not in a good way.

Yep, true beauty...unless you live there in the hills...not so pretty then. AS for smokey mountains, I have had my fill of them this week, along with about 1,000,000 other Californians! Peace, Goldwing
