His forces were united, not necessarily more numerous if we are to believe that the majority of Spaniards opposed the Nationalists. The Republicans argued against each other. His side was Nationalist. The opposition was:
Basque independentists
Catalonian independentist
Communists
- Stalinists
- Troskyites
Anti-monarchists
Anarchists.
Democratic Republicans
Each with their own goal in mind.
The symbol of the Falange, the bunched arrows, sums it up.
That he was a mean son of a b goes without saying. Also a dictator, etc. But he imbued unity. The others, well, each had his own idea.
As to the support Franco received. Yes he did receive support from Italy and Germany. In men quantity from Italy and quality from Germany (Condor Legion). He received large amounts of equipment in rifles, airplanes and tanks. However, so did the opposition, the Soviet Union sent advisers, tanks and airplanes, the leftist worlwide sent volunteers in very large amounts to fight for the Republic (remember the International Brigades??), even Mexico sent a shipload of rifles. The war was not fought by Germany, Italy and some Spaniards against a defenseless Spanish population. The difference was unified command on one side versus a sundry conglomeration of idealists, heroic no doubt, but without unity in their midst.
As to his permanence in power, you have to understand that a Civil War, as terrible and bloody as the Spanish was, is an experience that few people would want to repeat. The Spanish people wanted peace, the chance to rebuild, the opportunity to eat properly again and expect, if they were republicans at heart, that conditions would change so that they could oust Franco in the future.

He had the Catholic church on his side as well as the military. Between them they instilled fear into the Spanish people. Many people "disappeared"; torture was commonplace. It's no wonder people were afraid. Thankfully it didn't take long after Franco's death for Spain to start coming out of the shadows and develop into a democratic nation.

His army had more soldiers than the other army and more supplies and arms and he was a better leader. That is the answer to both questions. It is always the answer to why any side won a war.
