We don't lose our minds, we lose the thickened uterine wall and any sperm and eggs that may be left.
Edit:lol @ mrmanseven, the smell of blood puts us over the edge!
Edit: Object -you are clearly deluded. If you and every woman you know remain completely the same then you are all in denial. I do not wish to further fuel the fire of that 'I don't have to listen to you because it's that time of the month', but I don't think you are doing it any justice pretending that it doesn't change us. The women I know who claim it doesn't change them are the worst! Be aware of yourself and how you act and react to others and they wouldn't have to use it as an excuse to not listen because we would not be so bad.

Moody at most. It has more to do with being tired. It feels like I am sick when on it. On an average day I am usually pretty happy and laugh at everything. When on it it's usually just an "ugh" feeling. On the most part people don't notice because it doesn't happen that often. I only get mine about once every 6 months so people just think I am sick and want chocolate.
Something people don't get is people are crabby anyhow, don't have to be on their period. My step sister was always a b*tch. Everyone blamed in on her period. Then I Finlay got sick of that being blamed and said "She is on her period EVERY DAY! She should see a doctor, that's not normal." Using the excuse of being on the rag doesn't make it okay to be mean. If that was the case then no women would ever be allowed to leave the house.

Extreme moodiness, no mind loss so it doesn't make for a viable defense re: murder as in unwanted kids or cheating hubby, as some haved tried to use in past cases.
And to any man who doesn't think having a period is a big deal; when you have blood in sometimes copious amounts streaming out of you and pain besides, sometimes a great deal of pain, it is a big deal; men who get colds take to their beds and want to be waited on hand and foot and think they are dying. If a man ever had to menstruate or have a child the world population would drop down to zero.

I get a little moody [which is why I try to ignore my emotions while I'm on my period].. The thing that bothers me the most is the pain from cramping, it seriously makes me want to crawl into a corner and just die. But no, I can still think rationally.
EDIT-Teeleecee, I thought I was the only one! Thank goodness I'm not!

I don't think women are moody during their period but many women are before it because of the hormonal changes.
I sure was and it has a name but for the life of me I can't remember what it is.
Any woman who says that women don't get moody is very lucky (and ignorant) since it means that they don't suffer from the syndrome. They should have more sympathy for the many who do, however.

"Losing their minds" sounds a bit extreme. Some women, a small percentage, really do experience mood swings just prior to the onset of their periods. It's called PMS, and in the most extreme cases, PMS has been known to trigger a temporary state of depression (called PMDD), which generally goes away by itself once the period actually starts. It is fair to say, then, that there is a small number of women who have emotional disturbance (severe enough to be considered life-impairing) during the 3 to 5 day period prior to the actual flow of blood. I don't know the statistics on what percentage of women actually have PMS this severely (but I'll look this up for you), but it is a very small number who are affected to that extreme. Because it is not common for a woman to be so adversely affected, this is the reason so many women are getting offended by your question. (They themselves have not had this experience.) I have PMDD. I wouldn't say I "lose my mind" during my period. But 3 to 5 days before my period starts I am depressed. I cry easily. I tend to stay away from people as much as possible because I don't want my mood to affect them. I get angry, too, sometimes. I wouldn't say my feelings are irrational, however. They have a basis in reality. I don't get upset for no reason. I just have a harder time keeping my emotions hidden. I am emotionally sensitive during this time, and feel things more deeply. Luckily, this only lasts a few days.
See literature on "pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder"...the symptoms are very similar to major depression, and affect about 5% of women who have PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome.)

To tell you the truth: I wouldnt be able to track down the periods of most women I know, because they know how to control their emotions. I like to compare it with having had a bad day (the hormone fluctuations are roughly the same), and people are expected to handle it and behave peacefully. There are some who seem to be constantly in PMS though!
Oh, and there are some conditions were women literally lose their minds during their periods, and must rely on drugs to control their hormone inbalance.

there are different level of premenstrual hormones that cause women to be more emotional. some have severe cases - something that has come to the attention of the medical field - that may seem like the woman goes temporarily insane. but mostly, normal women are just trying to deal with drops and rises in hormones, hormones that control our physical and emotional reactions. some months i cry at everything, other months i'm impossibly moody, i eat everything that i see (ask my husband, he just doesn't understand it), and i'm in physical agony. some months are worse than others, but don't listen to anyone who says they stay the exact same all the time. no one can deal with the changes in hormonal levels and be absolutely fine.

For myself, yes, I do get extremely emotional and miserable, mainly because it's painful. Some women don't experience much pain or problems, but I'm one of the "lucky" ones who actually gets physically ill for a couple of days. Severe headaches, cramps, backaches, leg aches, and nausea. Graphic, I know...but some seem to suffer more than others. I've known women who are immobalized by their periods--they get migraines and can't stop being sick. For some of us, it's very difficult, while others seem to be all right. Do I lose my mind? No. Do I want to kill people? No...but I do want to off myself, since the pain is extremely severe. Most women don't have to do this, but I have to take prescribed medication for it, and have had to for years. There are a lot of wonderful things about being female...this is NOT one of them.

Some women get moody. It comes from having some hormones elevated and others dropped in a very short amount of time...
Sometimes we say things and do things that normally we might not... but often it's just because we suppress those reactions at other times to maintain peace. So you'll put yourself in some danger by shrugging aside a woman's reaction to something you did or said, and blaming it on PMS. Remember... heightened emotional state... we'll get angry faster too ;)
Rule #1 to get through... Never ever accuse a woman of PMS. A woman can say it. A man can't :)
