The sport of swimming is a competitive sport where teams compete in different races at a "meet" to see who can get the most points and win the Swim Meet. Very much like a track meet.

There are all sorts of swimming organizations. Some places have neighborhood pools and teams. Many high schools have teams and there are the world class swimmers who compete in international meets and the Olympics.

There can be anywhere from 2 teams to dozens of teams at a meet. There will be several different events in various distances. For instance there might be a men's 100 meter freestyle or womens 500 meter backstroke. There are also relay races where four team members each swim a certain length and the next team member goes in the pool when the one in the pool reaches the wall.

There are four strokes; butterfly, breast, freestyle and back stroke and there are usually men's and women's events. Some orgnizations will also have age brackets like 6-8 year olds or 11-14 year olds.

Famous swimmers, well there was Mark Spitz, he won 7 olympic medals. Johnny Weismuller was an olympic swimmer and he starred in several Tarzan movies.

Hope this helps.

Swimming is an individual team sport. It sounds stupid, but it is. Individuals win the races, teams win the championships.

Usually, there are 6-12 lanes (it has to be an even number). The even numbered lanes go to one team and the odd numbered lanes to the other team.

You swim races: 200 Medely Relay- 200 free- 200 IM- 50 free- 100 fly- 500 free-100 breast-100 free-100 back- 400 free relay are the typical high school races. Both boys and girls swim alll the events. The girls swim each event first, then the boys.

Depending on how many lanes you have, you'll be scored. Say you have 6 lanes (normal for highschool). The first person to finsish recieves 6 points. The second, 5.. and so on.

A medley is the combo of all the strokes. A medley relay is Back, Breast, Fly, Free. Because the backstroker begins in the water. But, you can also have IM (individual medley) where one person swims all the strokes. the order for the IM is fly, back, breast, free. Imers are very good swimmers and can swim all the strokes as equally well.

Distance freestyle is hard aslo. You swim just a bit slower than the sprinters, but for 10 times a longs.

Good luck!! Practice makes perfect with swimming. Rememebrt, individuals win races, teams win championships.

In the Olympics the swim in a pool 50 meters long and 8 lanes wide. Many Olympic swimmers have formerly been age group swimmers. A good male swimmer to look up is Michael Phelps. Check out Dana Torres.

Those are at the top of the game. Also see the film "Pride".

Swimming has a big "Country Club Crowd" and they don't like "Non-Country Club Kids".

Also in a meet your awarded points 1st so many point, 2nd so many points and relays count double.
