Liberalism can be traced back to ancient Rome, sometime around 609 BC with the establishment of the Roman Republic.

The most common individual associated with establishment of Liberal thought is John Locke in the late 17th Century. Locke wrote about fundamental liberal thought in his work Two Treatises on Government. Locke's essential liberal ideals included economic liberty and intellectual liberty. Locke is also credited with the idea of natural rights which he viewed as , "life, liberty and property".

Let me put it this way, as so many people equate this question to only include Americans, (though America has only been around a very short time). John Locke's philosophy is what American founding fathers based there claim of common inalienable rights on, and is credited for providing the idealogical justification of the American Revolution.

Starting at what point? There have been liberals as long as there have been governments. In our own case George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Sam Adams, Patrick Henery, Paul Revere, Aaron Burr, Charles Pinkney, George Clinton, James Madison, James Monroe are some of the most famous liberals of the beginning of the US.

Are you speaking of true politcal Liberalism or the bastardized Leftist ideology?

The first "Republican" political ideology, is generally attributed to Marcus Aurelius. John Locke is considered the "father" of political Liberalism. And Machiavelli's precepts were mostly politically liberal. All of these ideas are more in line with American Conservatism than Leftism.

If you're speaking of the politics of the American left, then it would be Marx or Lenin that gave birth to their ideology.

Not the first, but one that comes to mind, and the spiritual founder of the Democratic Party? Dispite the fact that he was a slave holder, (appreciate time context), Thom Jeff held it "self evident" that all men are created equal and endowed with "INALIENABLE" rights. You have to know something about his "heart and head" dialog. Martin Luther King rightly chose special emphasis on "ALL" in the former's statement. Down with Dictator Dumbya!!!
