Is there a website that lists privately owned apartments, not just the company-owned ones?

Prospective roommate has a felony (drug possession) from 15 years ago and this is a HUGE problem, trying to find someone who will rent out to us in spite of this. The only places so far that are willing to approve are in pretty shady neighborhoods... :(

You may have to look at more than 'privately owned apartments'. Mine are privately owned, and I would most probably reject a felon applicant as well.

Aside from that, I know of no website which differentiates on listings based upon ownership status.

Almost every landlord, large and small will do a criminal background check. Any felony conviction is going to be a red flag, if not an immediate auto rejection. Think outside the box. Why not buy a duplex and let a tenant help pay your mortgage? Here in Maine you can finance 100% of a duplex if you intend to owner occupy. A $75,000 house here is cheaper to buy than to rent, if you intend to live there for 2 years or longer. Expenses are less than $1000 a month and you be collecting some rent to lower your expenses. There are great programs for 1st time buyers in every state. If you have decent credit you can buy a small house and have any roomate you want!

Unfortunately, that's how it goes.

Even private owners have access to criminal records. A drug related felony is an auto rejection for most.

Many private landlords are now doing credit/backrounds checks...since it's so easy to obtain on the internet. Your best bet is to be honest about your roomate.

inspect the community newspaper. you are able to in many cases tell the privately owned places aside from the controlled residences via the way the advert is written. Networking is physically powerful with this too (i.e. communicate on your acquaintances).
