I'm 30 years old, and I hit my teen years right as the word Grunge became well-known in the music world. Nirvana, Alice in Chains, NIN, Faith No More, Ministry, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Pantera, Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers, all were my heros as I ran away from home in my graffiti-covered Chucks that I refused to stop wearing even after they were falling apart and covered with duct-tape.

I, like so many of my generation, have had a very hard time finding ANYthing in the world of popular music that comes close to the edge and pure soul-baring rawness and anti-authoritarian attitude that these guys showed.

SOO... my question is this. What new music has been released in the past 5 or 10 years that might change my mind? I just gave up and stopped listening to anything new; I've got 52 days' worth of pre-1998 music on my iPod and that's normally fine with me but I want to have hope for the future. So this is a call to all you more advanced teens out there... GIVE ME HOPE!

Ok, if you're a Faith No More fan you definitely need to check out like ALL of Mike Pattons side projects (he was their lead singer) he is a very talented vocalist and all his music defines genres and is very listenable. His music can't be called anything because you'll hear rock, jazz, acid, everything. He is very crazy on stage (he once stabbed a piece of glass through his hand and cut all the nerves) and is very musically talented, capable of playing all different kinds of music.

Here are his bands

- Mr. Bungle (his highschool band before Faith No More, they broke up but they were really good in the 90s-2000s, their first album sounds EXACTLY like Faith No More, their other 2 are more experimental but I still say its good)

- Tomahawk (again, this is alternative rock just like Faith No More and some of the other bands you listed)

- Fantômas (you may not like them, they're like experimental metal, they do have the guitarest from the Melvins (popular punk metal band that was a huge influence to bands in the 90s like Nirvana)

-Peeping Tom (This is Mikes newest project and you may not like it, its got like a heavy sound with hip hop type beats, but if you're a fan of bands like the Gorillaz, then its perfect for you, theres no rapping but it just sounds like rap)

Mike Patton has amazing vocal capabilities (as you've seen from Faith No More) I'm a huge fan of him and strongly recommend you look into him. He's still working hard with all those bands (besides Bungle, I think they broke up) and if you get into them, you'll never see music the same way again.

I'm just going to blanket-recommend all songs by these artists: Evanescence, The Fray, Keb' Mo', Jake Shimabukuro, Moby...and I know he's been around way longer than 5-10 years, but Eric Clapton.

I'm sorry to hear you've lost your faith in music. SOME music is a beautiful thing, not that new crap like Sean Kingston and MIMS.
♥ = really good
But for:

R&B:
Mary J. Blige ♥ - Be Without You, I'm Going Down ALL
Jennifer Hudson ♥ - DreamGirls(movie)

Rap: Jay Z ♥ - Dirt off yo shoulders ALL

Rock(heavy and other):
Fly leaf ♥ - I'm So Sick, All Around Me
Linkin Park ♥ - Numb, Bleed It Out, What I've Done ALL
Nickelback- If Everyone cared, Rockstar

I forgot what the genre was called:

Evanescence- ALL
