z = x + y + c

c is a constant, a sort of vertical shift sliding a plane off of the origin.

Also, the coefficients on the x,y,z will help to change the slope across two of the axes. If any are negative then the octant in question will change.

You are going to need to imagine this one.
A sheet of paper is lying flat.
Lift it up the Z axis. Now the paper is going through four octants.
Now tilt the paper down. The paper now cuts through the Z=0 plane and is going through six octants.
Now turn twist it a little on the last axis. You'll find that it is going through 7 octants.

This is probably most easily seen by way of illustration.

x + y - z = 4

Cuts thru 7 octants. Here are sample points.

(+,+,+) = (4, 4, 4)
(+,+,-) = (2, 1, -1)
(+,-,+) = (12, -4, 4)
(-,+,+) = (-4, 12, 4)
(+,-,-) = (4, -4, -4)
(-,+,-) = (-4, 4, -4)
(-,-,-) = (-1, -1, -6)

The only octant it doesn't cut thru is:
(-,-,+)
