I have some Egyptian cotton towels that I bought a while ago that were soft when I got them, but over the last year they've gotten kind of rough. Is there a brand of towels that's soft and lasts a while?

I've heard good things about Royal Velvet anyone try these? Or the Chris Madden towels?

use a water softener when you wash them
also very small amount of detergent
don't use downy because it makes the towels repel water

Towels are going to get a little rough over time, because of laundering. The laundering action gradually removes some of the pile of the cloth (what makes the towels plush). Also, if you have hard water, the crystals of hard minerals (calcium and magnesium) can build up in the pile, causing the towels to feel rough and kind of stiff.

Do you use fabric softener? If not, try it. And, liquid softener in the wash is better than softener sheets in the dryer.
