It wouldn't be fair because not all Americans believe in religion or practice the same religions. That's why it's NOT fair.

First of all I am not gay. The law doesn't have to change specifically for ME, but it should change for those who are gay.

Ideally No....The States has been ruled by radical Evangelicals for years....and they are the voting majority.
They also sympathize with Israel so they get their vote too! The rest of us "others" have to fall in line or we are outcasts and minorities. And I am tired of this Sharia law against gays...true it is illegal in Islam but every religion too. We have gays OH MY GOSH! it's just not as out there...unless you go to Gayarabs.com

You need to read the writings of Washington, Adams, Jefferson and the rest of that original batch of American radicals. You will be surprised what kind of influence religion had in their lives. When you read and understand them, then you will see why American laws are written the way they are written. As for the gay agenda, I can only imagine what they would have to say about it.

On the one hand, I don't think it's fair at all. On the other hand, I wonder if it's completely avoidable. Sure, the US Constitution states that no law shall be passed favoring an establishment of religion, but most people are religious. And since most people are religious, most people's values and beliefs are influenced by their religion's teachings. And since people vote according to their values and beliefs, government ends up ultimately being influenced by the religious views of many of the governed.

Have you read the bill of rights?
This applies to all people....including gay people.
By the way...marriage specificlly means a union between a man and a woman.
People are using the "marriage" incorrectly to mean the term "union". I am for gay unions.

Canada is awaiting the gay people that want to get married.
It is fair because it's what this country was BASED on. Why choose to live or stay in a country that has ALWAYS acknowledged God if you don't agree with the laws or principles?

Of course not! Otherwise we would need a specific law according to each existing religion. It would be a mess!

in case you may properly be slightly greater specific... a lot of our ethical ideals predated specific religions. The religions "observed" the morals that have been already usual. for occasion, the ten commandments. apart from no different God earlier me, and protecting the sabbath, the different 8 have been already seen "regulation". So there's a great spectrum here. i think of we are able to all agree that thou shalt no longer kill ought to be regulation. (even in spite of the undeniable fact that the government reserves the right to interrupt that regulation for themselves.) jointly as the rights of gays should not be abridged in line with sexual orientation, in basic terms simply by fact it relatively is denounced in the old testomony. Why is it that those sort of Christians insist that this united states became based to assist Christianity? that's no longer genuine. It became freedom from tyranny and the right to coach the religion of your decision.

I don't know of any religion other than Islam that has a specific anti-homosexual agenda (by definition but not in practice - look at the "American Taliban" (Walker whatnot?) kid who had the homosexual relationship with that guy that introduced him into al Qaida)
I have yet to see anyone quote directly anywhere in the Bible where it specifically condones homosexual civil union.

What until Sharia law if you think it is bad now. Why does everybody keep screaming about gay marriage - they have civil unions - what more do they need. And why. Trust me - I have known lots of gay couples and none of them ever wanted to get married - and most relationships don't last longer than 2 years. This would just be a financial windfall for divorce lawyers.

It's fair. That's the essence of why some agree and some disagree - it reflects the majority opinion. Many laws get changed through time, though, and perhaps this is one of them, although I doubt it. As long as marriage is defined as a union between one man and one woman, it won't include gay couples.
