You need to figure out how many people you want to reach and the cost to do so, either a paper ad or someone to come up with the visual design to use on tv or words on radio. This all takes money so there is your math. The media is the people whom you reach.

Think about polls they do around election time. It is just a whole bunch of statistics. They ask a certain number of unbiased people a question even not about elections and they assume that group represents the consensus of america. They have a certain confidence interval that they are right and so on.
