First of all, who ever said these photographic artifacts are spirits? Seriously ask yourself what makes you think they are. Someone at some time in the recent past decided, without any evidence or even reason to do so, declared that the globs you see on your pictures are spirits. The person made this up out of whole cloth. There is nothing to make anyone even suspect the orbs are spirits, except the fact that they showed up in cemetery pictures (and everywhere else too).

But let's just entertain the idea that orbs are spirits (even though there is no reason to). Why is it they are invisible to the human eye but show up in pictures made by cameras designed to capture only that which is visible to the human eye? If a camera can see it then we can see it.

Orbs do not show up in pictures unless a flash is used. Conduct an experiment where you take pictures with and without the flash. You are far more likely to see orbs in the pictures taken with the flash.

A lot of people confuse dust with orb's. You have to understand how a camera works. You can get a whole bunch of lens effects from digital and film cameras. Do you ever wonder why some cameras cost only $100 or $200 and others cost $1000 to $5000? It's because high priced cameras have lens that remove or block things like lens flash and flares. The round dust shape is caused by the lens's round aperture. It is some times called an airy disk aberration. See----

It is more common in a small inexpensive lens. To make matters worse they put the flash on the camera too close to the lens in these cameras which means you get a direct flash back into the lens.

This is a great question and you have recieved some great answers. My daughters just got the scare of their lives when an orb and a shadow person appear swiftly on a video they were taking on the cell phone. They did not use a flash and the only lighting in the room is an over head light kit from a fan. My daughter is dancing like a fool and a dark Shadow person walks behind her in an instant( Ihave just learned a bout these..... never experienced one or saw one before) and then at the end a flash of light (light streak) comes up and ends up looking like a clear orb. It is freaky. If any one can explain this one to me I would be thrilled.

Thats easy, but it takes some experience. From the texture and lighting you can tell with experience if its moisture, dust, a scratch on the lens, small insect flying close to the lens. If you take a lot of pictures you will be able to tell what the orbs are.
The one think i can tell you, is that orbs are not spirits or ghosts or anything silly like that.
If you take a lot of photographs, you know that also.

A true orb is perfectly round and unlike dust you cannot see through it. Dust can almost be transparent. A true orb is almost like a ball of light. It is a solid mass.

I guess it depends on how it moves. If it moves with the apparent breeze in the room. Then its dust. If it seems to move totally of it own accord, then it could be an orb.
