They don't have webs... You never see them with anything.

My mum told me she once saw a house spider run along the floor and jump to catch a wasp that was flying low in the house. It missed though. Could that be possible?

The "house" spiders you are referring to are known as jumping spiders "salticidae" They move about in a irregular gait and jump on their prey. They attach a web to the surface before they jump in case they miss. They live in a small crevice or cocoon. Like all spiders they eat by sucking liquid from their prey. Try tapping your fingernail near them, they will jump at it.
