Just as when tissues became Kleenex and adhesive bandages became band-aids, when something is "bought" often enough, whether a product or an ideology, you become representative of that product.
An overwhelming amount of Democrats are liberal and an equally overwhelming amount of Republicans are conservative.
I'm not sure anyone decided that they were mutually inclusive, it just happens to be the way it is in the vast majority of the cases.

You are right and you are wrong. Here in New York State we have a Liberal Party and a Conservative Party -- and they endorse candidates and have a line on the ballot -- Liberal and Conservative are also more general political philosophies. Also, in the UK they has a Conservative Party and a Liberal Party (as well as Labour, Green, etc.) It don't think their are very many liberal republicans or conservative democrats these days.

The problem is is that most liberals swear allegiance to the democratic party, while most conservatives align themselves with the republicans.

Many people (such as Greens) accuse the Democrats of not being liberal at all, just as other people (such as Libertarians) accuse the Republicans of not being conservative in any way shape or form.
It's all a matter of perspective! (Oh yeah, we're not allowed to have that! The whole world has to be in black and white!!!)

Great question, I wish I knew why. I am a conservative and people allways say to me "so you area republican" and that is simply not true because I will easily vote for someone in the Democratic party. I spose it is ignorance.

Yes, you "can be" a liberal Republican or a conservative Democrat. But both of those species of animals are on the Endangered Species List. Both of those types are dying out very quickly and soon they will both be extinct animals.

essentially we have "4" or "5" things in america
the reason for this is there is a matrix,
fiscal - social - and military
I am a fiscal conservative, a social liberal, and a military neocon, so im basically the guy at the republican party saying "leave roe v wade alone"
however im for the powell doctrine so i attack bush for his mishandling of iraq,
that doesnt mean im some liberal democrat,
so social - we can be conservative or liberal,
fiscal - we are for low taxes or high taxes, again conservative or liberal
military/foriegn policy - we are for war when us national interest is there - all of us are - its just the standards for what that national interest is that many of us differ on
so within this matrix we have people like me who are fiscal conservative - meaning im for low taxes and a fair trade policy, etc.
anyhow, you get the idea
no one reads every word on these things anymore

I fully understand that.
But there are too many people who post here who are ignorant. They believe if you're liberal, you're a Democrat... and if you're conservative, you are a Republican.
The world just isn't that black and white.

I understand that.
@putin: Don't ever make assumptions about what I can and can't be when exercising my faith. You have no idea what you're talking about, just go away.
@Jenna: You're getting votes "against" your stupid idea that we're all bigots for disagreeing with you. Thanks for playing. Next.
LOL @ your senseless and stupid rant in the form of an edit ... ditto.

I don't think that everyone here even knows what the definitions of "conservative" and "liberal" are.
