The mnemonic for this is 'red-right-returning', meaning that, if you are headed upriver, keep the red buoys to your starboard (right) side. When heading downriver, keep the green buoys to the right.

You did not mention which river, not all rivers follow the rrr rule. Some rivers have mid channel markers. You need to get a chart for the river in question to be sure. You should have a chart on board for any waters you navigate anyway. A few bucks spent on charts and a little time planning can save a major repair bill.
