how is the existence of God and the existence of telepathy related? I want to write an essay for my psych class , stating why scientist shouldnt disregard the existence of telepathy just because there's no actual proof of its existence..

what are some examples you would state to back up your claim?

suggestions or example are welcomed..
thanks in advance!

Science has always disbelieved what it could not study,it is part of the philosophy of the scientific method to prove a theory.
If the experiment can't be repeated and on a regular set of variables for all researchers, then the theory is unfounded.
That makes for no scientific argument of the existence of telepathy and would be difficult to use as a point to be made.
You could try to statistically compare the general believes of a cross section of a population, this would be difficult also because you would likely not find a population that supported the claim.

I realize that this will probably lose me any chance of getting 10 points, but I think scientists _should_ disregard the existence of telepathy, precisely _because_ it can't be proven.

From a purely practical standpoint, of what use is telepathy if its very existence can't be demonstrated? Anyone claiming to be telepathic should be very easy to prove their ability. And yet in the whole history of the world, exactly zero people have managed to do so.

There's a reason why science operates on evidence. The purpose of the scientific process is not just to discover knowledge, but just as importantly to be able to verify that it is in fact real and true knowledge. This is what separates science from pseudoscience, and science from religion.

God(s) and telepathy are related in that the existence of neither has been proven, and as such neither has a place in proper, real science. Just the same though, if solid evidence for either _could_ be found, then I know a lot of scientists who would be extremely eager to study it! Scientific rejection of the unproven is not because scientists don't like these things, it's just that it's impossible to study, quantify, describe, or put to use anything whose existence is unproven.

What it all boils down to is, science is NOT a belief or set of beliefs. It is a tool, a process, and a methodology. Beliefs in gods or telepathy IS a belief, which ultimately rests on faith.

Since this is a psych class and not a theology class, the teacher is forcing you to make assumptions about the existence of God, in effect forcing you to believe in God, if only for the purpose of the essay.
Since the teacher cannot judge your theology even if you believe in God, any answer you give can be correct.
If however, the teacher is looking for the logic in your thinking, this is a subject for a logic class, not a psych class.
And if you don't believe in God at all, you can't write an essay, so what grade are the atheists going to get?
Your teacher is wrong for assigning this essay since it infringes on your right to believe what you believe without it being given an "A" or an "F" by someone. Report it to the school board. It sounds like a violation of Federal law.

By definition, God is not subject to scientific investigation.

Telepathy, having a physical or organic origin, is subject to testing. To the best of my knowledge, however, there has been no credible, reproducible evidence that telepathy (Spock's "My thoughts to your thoughts" or two people communicating over long distances using some inner voice or picture capability) exists at all.

This does not rule out the existence of telepathy, but right now, belief in it must rest on anecdotal evidence and faith, just like God.

You are asking two questions (a. how are god and telepathy related, and b. why scientists shouldn't disregard telepathy). You should clarify which one you want.
