This buzz about polygamy is a precursor to the changes in the culture that are about to occur. Sadly, a traditional family can not financially compete with a corporate family. Today the dollar is falling in value, oil is at a all time high, housing is dropping into recession, personal savings are next to nil, women are postponing marriage to become the majority of college graduates and then filling professional occupations.
Good males are hard to find because, male homosexually is on the rise (10%), male criminals are filling our prisons (10%), ten percent of the male population is mentally ill and no woman has the time to pick through the millions of divorced men for good provider/winner. Have you ever heard that "All the good ones are taken.?" So what is a woman to do?
Now enters Oprah, having oH My! moments about the new polygamy that offers women 30,000 ft mansions or their own homes, multiple cars, close lasting female friendships, a caring supportive family to raise children in, but most of all the freedom for women to reach peak career positions and earnings and for her poly family to have a beach house, mountain cabin on the lake and lots and lots of money and the time and people to enjoy it with.
Some may be jealous that they will have to share the big love of their husband, but others are having steak and lobster every night of the week and flying to Paris for vacations. While that poor, too tired tonight, husband with one wife and two kids is working two or three jobs to compete with the mega earning power of a female powered corporate run poly family.

Just to add a thing often misunderstood about Africa. having lived three years in Burkina Faso, I can assure you the women are strong and independent first, and only then decide themsleves if they are better off in a polygamous marriage. Then the reasons are practical, like having a home and a financial basis, and even more not being left behind (no such thing as being single!)
From what I suspect in the situation you talk about it is about certain religious groups in the US. There is no such thing as free choice there, as examples from outside the community are blocked, and polygamy is presented as the will of God. And to be honest, mainstream christianity ofcourse uses the same source to claim monogamy.
So I would say that its not so much the polygamy that is the problem (same as you phrase it), but the fact that (men) people are shielding (women) others from making these choices.
In practise a government cannot bring much change (it would be less ethical to force people to be exposed to all thought if they do not wish to), but a change will come from within, such as from women who are courageous enough to pose questions about their free and independent will in these matters.
And thats exactly what Oprah is doing. Smart !!!

I think that it's fine as long as you can support your family. In Africa, this is routine and has been since the beginning of time.
In UT and AZ, they are not supporting their families, they are living off of tax payer dollars and that's not ok.
I don't have a problem with the practice theoretically and, really, with so much infidelity going on in marriages these days, the only real difference is that you know the other woman and she's in the house pulling her own weight instead of taking money away from your family.

I think that it is very wierd and I just don't understand it. Why would all these women want to share one man? It seems to me that the whole lifestyle makes the women seem like they are nobody special. But if a woman will go into that- whatever!

Is there life and does not affect me one bit.
I have class and manners I would not lower my standards to be
with one and share him with other women. That is just asking for a STD..and Alot of conflict with women fighting and drama.Of who sleeps where and what night! The kids suffer as well and will maybe do the same as there parents.Just makes me sad for this to happen.
Like I said..is there life. But they are living off our goverment system with there 10 plus klds. That is the only fact that does affect us as a whole. The mormans do it..The africans and generations before us.

PolyGNY--one man having many wives--would actually be impossible to pull off unless you were very wealthy. You'd be supporting several families at one time.
Most Americans can barely support one family these days.
Besides, look at the divorce rate now in single marriages. Can you imagine the overload on the court system if polygyny were allowed?

I've known some folk who live that lifestyle (and some of them do it successfully) ...it's complicated & hard to do (and many of us aren't wired for it).
As long as everyone is aware of what's going on with everyone else & knows what the "rules" are - all is well & they can all get along.
