I recently ordered some regular packing tape and they sent me hot melt tape by accident. I called them up and they said keep it and sent me the regular tape. Does hot melt tape require special equipment? Can it be used the same way as regular packing tape?

It was cheaper for them to tell you to keep the wrong tape than to pay to have it sent back to them, hehehe.

To use hot melt tape, you need a heat source. There are special packaging guns designed for this, but too expensive to purchase for just one wrong shipment of tape. An iron might work, if you want to bother with actually trying to use up the hot melt tape.

You might call around and see if any one locally can use the hot melt tape, or put it up on FreeCycle.org.
