Many have answered God to be the answer. But even a friendship with God also gets old. :) You know He is there, but I think everyone is always looking for something more. :)

Immanuel Kant thought that we have a dual personality, at times we need to be in company, at times we need to be alone, i guess the answer to the question is that the search for companionship ends by the time you get to know someone who can learn to enjoy the time you re with as well as enjoy the time you re want to be alone, task that seems hard to solve but not impossible.

Until the end of time.....I think this will be the answer, the problem is once you find someone who you think is the right one, they change, or you change, or you find that you didn't really know who they really were at all. Or something happens and you lose them.

For instance, my grandmother and grandfather loved each other very much, my grandmother passed 6 years ago, since then my grandfather has been lonely has seeked companionship and has found friendship, but in the end, I believe he will hold onto my grandmother and seek her out through whatever lies ahead "until the end of time".

Wow, they just don't make em like that anymore, no one is ever satisfied and we are always checking to see if the grass is greener. We love the ones who hurt us and hurt the ones who love us. The never ending cycle of always seeking companionship, finding it, losing it, searching again.....

It will only end when we become friends with God. That longing in our hearts is why Christians think that God is a person not simply energy or nothingness. In fact we believe He is Three persons in a relationship of love, and our hope is to become part of that circle of friendship, companionship, intimate union of love. A rebel who lived in the 300's AD had lived a very immoral life and had been part of many philosophies and cults until he finally became a Christian, his name was Augustine and he wrote a lot but one of his most famous quotes answers your question:
"Our hearts are restless until they rest in God"

My guess is that we will always search for others. But it is an easy guess, since we are just beginning such an endeavor.
Perhaps after we have made contact with the millionth new sentient beings and things get so crowded that we have to share a common bathroom, then I think we may be off to the woods for awhile. Suppose, as Vonnegut once described, we discovered that a new alien race's only means of communicating with us is through farting and tap dancing...after awhile wouldn't we just get SO fed up we would start hitting them with a bat? :-)

life is constantly in a state of change. friendships/companionship is based on mutual interests. if your interests change, we, as by nature, seek out similar "groups" with the same common interests.

If you mean a mate, then yes, it can end when 'man' finds his wife/soulmate/whatever you want to call it.

If you mean a platonic friend, usually you don't search for one, they find you.

COMPANIONSHIP AND FRIENDSHIP CAN BE FOUND IN GOD. WE WERE CREATED TO FELLOWSHIP WITH HIM AND WE CAN'T BE LONESOME OR UN FULFILLED WHEN WE ARE FILLED WITH HIS HOLY SPIRIT.
