I want to know if Skakespeares play is based on a Macbeth who lived in 11th century Scotland

Well, not really.

There was King MacBeth, but the play itself is a fiction. MacBeth was actually a pretty successful king, rather than the short-lived despot portrayed by Shakespeare. Under the Scottish custom of alternate succession, he had a better claim to the throne of Scotland than Duncan. Macbeth allied with Thorfinn, Jarl of Orkney, who defeated Duncan at Torfness. Macbeth then ruled Scotland for 17 years, 'was liberal to the church and popular with his Scottish subjects'. Even when Duncans son Malcolm defeated Macbeth, the throne passed to Macbeths son Lulach, indicating that the Macbeth dynasty still commanded popular support.
