It's been shown that true sociopaths lack a proper fear response. It's also been shown that (if I remember the statistics correctly) there is 1 sociopath for every 100 people (I apologize if this statistic is wrong). Not every sociopath is a killer, and they often thrive in competitive environments (big corporate businesses are most common). I imagine that a sociopath has a place in the evolution of humans. They lack empathy, so don't look to one to comfort you, but you can rely on them to be dangerous warriors, ruthless rulers, and deadly enemies in general. A sociopath, lacking the fear response that most have, take any means necessary to get ahead in life (thus the reason they excel in big business). They will set you up for a fall, then step over you when you're on the ground. Sadly, a sociopath would have a hard time adjusting to a position of leadership in a democratic society, as in a truly democratic society, they would have to answer to someone. This, in turn, limits how far a true sociopath could probably excel. Hope this helps out.

Impulse without conflict. Where you will see a wad of money sticking out of an old lady's pocket and be briefly tempted by it, you will not get that guilty feeling associated with it telling you that you would feel horrible about stealng from an old lady. Sociopaths lack that flashing red light in their heads that gives them empathy and sympathy. When they see a child drowning they don't think "I need to save that kid", they think "maybe I'll get a reward for saving that kid" or "I don't want to get my clothes wet".

Some sociopaths are very good at disguising this and blending in btw. Just because they don't feel like you do doesn't make them stupid. Many are exceptionally clever.

Consider the following riddle:

A woman goes to a funeral for a friend of the family. She sees a man that she fancies. A week later she murders his sister. Why?

Most normal people would have no idea how to answer this. Sociopaths very quickly figure out that it was the best way to insure that the girl would see the brother again at his sister's funeral.

This is the mentality of a sociopath. They act on passion and desires with no filtering system to keep them in line.

Well, several. However, sociopathy isn't inherently caused by ASPD, however many people with ASPD are sociopaths, and vice versa.
Sociopath is a personality type, characterized by lack of guilt, empathy, and remorse. Other traits may include pathological lying, failure to plan ahead, trouble adjusting to and often upsetting the established order for the lulz, and impulsiveness. Sociopaths can, however, form close emotional bonds with those they care deeply about. Sociopaths do feel emotions, and can live a relatively normal life (so long as they don't do something stupid).

They mostly feel anger and/or self pity. They have most of the other emotions that everyone has except--and this is a biggie--love and empathy. They generally feel superior to the average person and can't relate to the emotions of others. They are able to manipulate people and will stop at nothing to get what they want.

A sociopath only feels his/her own emotions, feelings, and moods. No concept or concern for others except how they can be used to satisfy themselves.

when a sociopath is young, they are neglected needed emotional contact. the brain cuts off need for symapthy, love, guilt, etc. this is nessesary for the child to survive.

later, they feel that they are entitled to act outside the law, that they are special because they often have this blown up feeling of grandiosity and self-indulgence.
