Today she has visable bruises on her body from defending herself. What should she do? Should she file charges against him?

She was defending herself...she had her son in her arms and he came lunging after her. She was trying to protect herself and her son and her hands were not available.

Definitely! There is an answerer for this question that deserves no credit whatsoever. Do not acknowledge him, thumbs up him or award him best answer. He is Larry M who is nothing more than a vicious troll and right wing conservative. He should rot in hell with the other scum of the earth. He belongs in a prison cell for life if he isn't there already. Larry M, I am coming to get you! Go masturbate in a corner dickwad!

The time to bring up the charges was last night when the police responded to the original incident. At this point there is no way of knowing that the bruises came from last night and were not self inflicted this morning as an act of revenge.

Biting is not normally a self-defensive move and I think the court will see through that argument.

Self defense is limited to the acts and force needed to STOP an attack or to retreat from the attack. It does not cover retaliation for the attack.

As an example someone hits you once, however you do not fear that they will hit you again. There is no need to use physical force to stop the attack. Hitting the other person would be in retaliation and would expose you to the same charges they face. In most cases the courts do not care who swung first (each state is different of course)

That all being said, if she is in an abusive relationship she needs to get out. Get a protection order against her boyfriend, pack and leave or have him pack and leave.

She should also seek counseling to help her through the mental issues abuse can cause.

I wish her luck.

She has bruises from defending herself, not from him hitting her. Defending herself from what? That could imply that she was hitting him so hard she bruised herself, which won't hold water legally. If he put the bruises there and she wants to end the relationship and be back and forth in court then yes, press charges. But if she got the bruises from beating or pushing on him, or if she wants to go back to him, or if she just wants it to be done and over with, then I wouldn't press charges, because it will be sure to end the relationship. Nothing says "It's over" like a warrant. Good luck.

Unless she bit him to prevent him from hurting her, it's not self-defense. If she bit him in retaliation, she is responsible.

Self defense is pretty much non existent.

Yes, she should go to the women's crisis center in your area or the women's shelter and ask them to take pictures of her injuries and go with her to the police station.
