A few months ago, we moved from a big house to a small apartment. We're renting two storage units that cost us $150/month. One unit is pretty much filled with computer junk my husband has been collecting since high school.

He's a computer geek, and some of the junk has sentimental value. But most of it he keeps because he says, "Oh, I might need a piece from xxx someday."

My current junk removal policy is: If you haven't used something in a year and you can buy the same thing on ebay or wherever for less than $50, then we toss it.

I think that's pretty fair and reasonable, and so does he, but he is still resistant and claims things are more valuable than they actually are. I mean, he had about 40 dusty monitors just sitting on shelves in the garage that he hasn't touched in ten years.

How can I get him to let his stuff go?

I will tell you what I do. I would get rid of one or two of the monitors toward the back of the shelf and wait about a week. If he doesn't notice get rid of a couple more, then a couple more etc. Do that with all of his stuff, including the junk in the storage units until there is only one left. Then tell him it is time to clean that one out and when he asks where the other unit is say that YOU cleaned some things out of YOURS (not his). Honestly, he will probably not even know what is missing. It may be a lie but it is a small one.

All I can say is you are not alone. That is why storage units are popping up all over the place. Where I live anyway. It's big business. I agree with your thinking and it sounds reasonable. Maybe you could think of something quality he would like to have with all of the money you would save by not having the storage units in a year or two. New HD TV, Stereo, etc. You could save $1800 in a year! Good Luck!

I'm thinking along the lines of LoraC. I don't know if any of his possessions have any monetary value, but maybe if you had a garage sale you could use the proceeds of that to treat yourselves to something you both would enjoy. Or, save it and put it toward the fund of a new TV (or whatever) that you could purchase with the money that would have been used for storage fees (LoraC said it better, though!)

It's a tough situation. Good luck!

NOT easy. I have been fighting over the same thing with my husband over the last two years. At first I was nice, now I only fight with him all the time over it.

Just rent a frigging storage unit and have him pay for it. Just talking about this gives me headache.

Yuck, I couldn't handle that it would drive me nuts. I would seriously just sit him down and tell him that it bothers you and why, then since he respects you and you respect him maybe you can come to some resolution of getting rid of 1/4 of the things this year (the oldest ones) and continue that throughout the years. If he respects you I am sure he will be willing to part with the junk. (you should hope) Remind him that you love him and understand that it's important for him to keep these things to him but explain why you aren't comfortable with it for your reasons. Do not demand of him. Be understanding.

Gonna have to force him to do it. Nicely, hopefully.

Run ads for the stuff and sell it for ridiculous cheap and have people come pick it up.

Honestly, if you think he won't go into a frenzy, you might want to consider slowly getting rid of these things without running it by him. Not the nicest thing I know, but my ex-wife was a packrat and I had to simply start throwing shizzle away. It was a problem when she figured it out, but by then the place was traversable.

Easy, file for divorce! If you had to move from a nice house to a small apartment, chance are things aren't going too well anyway!

That's what you get for marrying a geek!
