It really depends a lot on the position. As far as I can see, RBs have the shortest careers, because their body can just absorb so many hits. Remember, the number of carries (and the number of reception) by a running back shows basically how many times he gets hit. Coming back to my subject, a QB is usually good for 10-15 years, (good means able to play, not that he can or will start, necessarily)
RB careers is around five years, you do not see a lot of running backs that have 10+ years in their career. Their body just cant take it.
WR: They have about 8-13 years on them. Although they still get tackled a lot (but by corners, not d-lines and linebackers, who dishes out hits like presents)
O-Line: 7-13 years, most offensive lineman can play up to late single digit years.
D-Line: Not usually more than 12 years, becuase as they grow older, they seem to lose their speed and agility etc. Although Strahan is still playing,.........
Linebacker: Linebackers give out hits, but the contact still inevitable and takes a toll on the body, so i guess 14 years for a linebacker is pretty much the limit.
Corners: Like WR, corners lose their speed, which is vital, when they get old. Thats why not many corners are still playing for 10+ years.
Safeties: Safeties can have a long career (in the case of John Lynch), but they also tend to lose their speed and agility as the years go by.
Kickers: Since kickers doesn't tackle or be tackled(usually), they have the longest career span. A lot of kickers have been kicking after 15 years in teh league, like Andersen, Elam etc.
So i guess in all, if you can play more than 10 years in the NFL, you probably had a good career.

The average career of most players is only 3-5 years.
If you're a solid veteran and remain healthy, your career will probably be longer, but that's the usual average.

Yeah, Larry Johnson or Edgerrin James. Both are around 30 and performance has been declining in the last couple years. Partly due to supporting cast, but partly due to age. Ahman Green has been off the map his last two years in Green Bay.
