But someone could have found it a week ago before you realised you`d lost it....

They have one department for both. One side is for lost, which is probably just a computer where you record what is lost, etc. The other side has cubicles where turned in found items are kept.

You receive a found item, you go over to the good ole computer and look it up. It it's there, happy someone. If not, it sits on the shelf until someone reports it lost.

True! So it should just be called a 'found'. But if it's found, it's not lost...

Because the people who find it hand it in

The people who have lost it then know where to go to get it back
