Gimp is the best free photo editing software out there. and it's easy. It contains all the necessary tools to isolate an object in the image and make the background white.. But, Photoshop is amazing, and the best thing out there!! Current Version: CS3.

Serif Photo Plus 11 !
I find it excellent for this process (extraction) and it's just as good as Photoshop at most other stuff too.
Serif are doing a deal at the moment for £29.99!

Photoshop!!!! Its not free......unless you blag a copy from limewire, which is what all proffessionals do!
