You're partially right about the age thing: Halloween is great for kids under 13 or so, and then there are those awkward teenage years where everybody's too cool to dress up or pay any attention to Halloween.
But then you get a little older and you become nostalgic and you remember the fun you had as a kid over Halloween. And you find yourself celebrating it and suddenly it's fun again, and sometimes way more fun because now you can drink at the Halloween parties your friends are having.
Aside from the nostalgia, it's the kind of holiday where you just let loose. It's just a fun holiday with no strings attached, an excuse to get together with friends. You don't have to buy anybody anything (except lots of candy for trick-or-treaters, which eventually becomes your candy when you have leftovers). And you don't have to be you for a day - you can dress up and be whoever you want to be.
Basically, it's just fun for lots of people and really, there's no harm in that.

Oh boy, hang on. This is my number one rant these days...
Ok, Halloween is not just for those under 14. I'm 18, and adore Halloween. You get to be somthing you're not, there's free candy and partying involved! How can you pass up free candy? You're never too old for Halloween. Our imaginations can run wild. Always wanted to be a vampire? You can be for one night! And no one will make fun of you!
And, face it. Everyone needs a good scare once in a while, and Halloween is the perfect chance.
You can decorate your house like the ones you see in movies, and no one will think you have mental issues. Why? Because it's Halloween and Halloween means fun.
THAT'S why americans are SO obsessed with Halloween...

On the contrary, while trick or treating is fun and delicious for kids, the act of giving out candy is just as cathartic an act of facing immorality/death as the immoral threatening/begging done by the costumed kids. Usually you'd call the cops or fight back if someone threatened/begged you for food at your door, but on this one night we face our deepest fears and give in, just like we will one day inevitably give in to oblivion.
Of course only I know this, while the vast majority of Americans just "feel" it and call it "fun". They face their fears by watching horror movies, going to haunted houses and handing out candy.
And many people embrace their creativity by making gory yard displays or haunted houses, and coming up with interesting costumes for their kids or even themselves.
I'm sorry but I just can't find anything "wrong" with Halloween except that more people don't go all out and try to take it to the next level.
Thanksgiving and Xmas, now I have a problem with how people celebrate those holidays. For one thing they should simply be combined. Two days meaning exactly the same thing: social/familial sharing, held only a couple weeks apart is excessive.

There's more to Halloween than dressing up and getting candy. I'm 32 and this is my absolute favorite holiday. Besides, it coincides with Samhain, the Wiccan New Year. It's worth a celebration!

i am 14 and i am going, its free sweets and a fun thing to do
but its not all the Americans- after all it originated in Ireland,uk and then in the early 1900s it was taken by people from Ireland and into America so basically it was not them that originated it,but there not harming people by really liking it unless they are not really supporting Halloween and they are using it as an opportunity for vandalism

Unless you have kids, then it has significance. Or if you are a person who likes to have a good time. Or one who thinks any excuse for a party is a good one.
Quit peeing on the parade, mister all grown up no more fun dude.
