Is it just a random number that is assigned when a birth certificate is issued or what?
If not random, what determines the number? Geographic location, year of birth, what?
Links to info would be great too!

On a side note, do other countries have a simmilar system for tracking thier citezens like our SS numbers?

The first three digits determine where you were born, what region of the country. The second two digits represent the year and are modified through a code, and the last four digits are completely random.

The state the town the hospital all make up the first 5 digits of your social the rest is random to you

The state you apply for your social affects the number...then its random. Usually the first 3 digits you can tell where someone applied for the social security numbe.r

Geography is a factor. The first three digits are a location code of some sort.

They changed them between 1979 and 1982, but I dont know when (only know cause my brother's is the same as my parents' but mine is different).
