First person shooter means you see the game from first person point of view as if you are really the character.

Third person shooter means you can see yourself as if someone is looking down on your character but yet you are still controlling that character.

First person shooter
FPS games are always having the player to see through the character's eyes. You see what the character sees. You always have to watch your back and have to have a strong sense of all of your surrounding or else you're dead on the spot. This type of gameplay is what I think is a better experience to play games that handle aiming and shooting down enemies with a shooting type of weapon. Consider it more fun and challenging. It's like you are there in the game and it's like you're in another world where you can freely look around to your surroundings.
3rd person shooter
3rd person shooter games are alright. The best example of one of the games that uses this type of game is SOCOM 3 for the PS2. Although you can use FPS as an optional choice but the game doesn't really focus in FPS gameplay but with 3rd person shooter. One of the advantages you can have when you play a 3rd person shooter is peek in a corner by having the character stand still while you move ur aiming/camera to see if there are any enemies up ahead. This is something useful to most players but in my most humble opinion is not fun and challenging as using FPS. I rather play an action/adventure game like Prince of Persia The Sands of Time that is basically a 3rd person and I know it's not a shooter but 3rd person type of games are usually meant for action/adventure games like Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, Jak, etc. you get my drift? Don't get me wrong 3rd person shooters are good but not good enough. I personally think FPS is better.

A first person shooter (FPS) gives the perspective of the character, like you are looking at the game world through their eyes, something like Halo or Bioshock. Third person shooters (TPS) are where the camera is normally in a fixed position and follows the character through the game world, like Gears of War and Star Wars Battlefronts 2.

A 1st guy or woman is the place you spot the gun, and the aiming reticule. Like in Black Ops, you purely see the gun and the hip hearth factors of interest... you additionally can look down the standards of interest. a third guy or woman game is the place you spot from in the back of the participant you're controlling... video games like lifeless area, Mercanaries use this. In Fallout video games you are able to toggle between the two recommendations.

1st person: Medal of Honor series, Call of Duty series and Battlefield 1942/Vietnam
3rd: GTA series, The Godfather, Mafia.
Some games allow you to switch back and forth to whatever you find easiest to control.
