The electors used to choose the president all by themselves. There was no popular vote for president when this country was founded. There were two reasons for this. Reason one is that this country was not founded as a democracy. We are a republic that is a loose affiliation of states that have accepted common trade laws and currency. Electors' jobs were to protect the people from their own stupidity (this was back when people were honorable on a regular basis).

Reason two was that since the federal government was not intedned to have any say in the daily lives of the citizens (the states are soverign), it simply did not matter who the president was to the average person. It had no bearing on their life.

Actually, the electors were appointed at one time and voted however they chose to vote. It is not like that now. A candidate that wins a majority in a state , receives the electoral votes for that state. For example, if candidate A wins 51% of the popular vote in Virginia, candidate A wins all of the electoral votes from Virginia.
