The alternator on my truck is going out and a new one is $120.00 with the trade in. Although a used one from the junk yard is $45.00

Would you put a used alternator on your truck? It's a 98 Ford Ranger XLT V-6 3.0

did the junk yard record the mileage of the vehicle they got it from?........if it,s high or they don't know......don,t trust it.......most of what wear,s is brush,s & bearing,s.....as long as no electrical short,s have occured in the vehicle,s past.......it,s not difficult to replace theese item,s as long as you have the knowledge to do so......search for an indepant electrical rebuilder in your area....if your in I,ll.....north....I can recomend one...........good luck.

How about a Mechanically inclined Woman? An alternator is only going to run for so long, how old is the one from the junk yard? If not but a few years 3-4 buy it seeing how it comes with a warranty. If you can find a reliable mechanic in your area you can purchase a rebuild kit for about $40 and then you will have a new one. The reason all part warehouse's want the old one is because they rebuild them and resale them. Make sure if they say new they are just not talking about the re-manufactured internal structure.

No. It's not worth the savings. In addition you won't be positive the alternator will work on your vehicle as you will with a new alternator. It's the labor hassle of having to do the job more than once. You'll know a quality brand of new alternator is going to work if it's the right part number and carefully installed correctly. Some alternators have internal voltage regulators and some are totally computer controlled by the vehicle's PCM. If you install a new part, the shop will give you their full warranty and you pay no parts or labor cost if the alternator fails in the warranty period.

Go for it. If it doesnt work you are only out the time you spent putting it in and taking it back out. The downside is if it does work but goes out anytime soon you have no warranty on it and will have to buy a new one. The one at the parts store is actually remanufactured if they are asking for a core return. All this means is that it has been completely rebuilt and they will do the same with yours. Buying one from the parts store should come with at least a 1 year warranty so if it fails you can take it back and get a new one for no cost to you.

If the one from the junk yard is 45 bucks go for it, and if it's bad you can return it and then buy the new one, it's at least worth a shot right? I actually get all my car parts from junk yards and my baby runs like a dream!

Nothing wrong with used with guarantee. What will it cost to put it in though (and is that part of the $120 cost mentioned first)? Your savings will disappear if the mechanic says it would cost $90 to install.

Have never heard of an alt. "going out" ? It either works or it doesn't. If The problem was posted it might save you some money and time. A rebuilt alt. is every bit as good as a new one, much cheaper, and carries a warranty. $120 is far too much money. NEVER replace any part till you know the problem.

why men only us woman are not a bunch of dummies you know. if i had the money i'd buy the new one. but you can take the used one to any auto parts store and have it checked for free if it doesn't work you don't have the time and expence of putting it on first and that is coming from a MECHANICALLY inclined WOMAN

Get the used one, But ask for a warrinty on it.. If it's no good you can at least take it back insted of going through like 3 then you do have the cost of a new one.

its worth the money to just get a new or rebuiltone from an auto parts store. they usually hold a warranty of some kind on them. but new is best. some rebuilders only replace whats wrong with the old alternator and then clean it up to make it look new. others rebuild it with new coils, brushes and cases etc.

A reconditioned one is the best option, the parts needed to recon cost very little,so paying a bit more to have these fitted is worth it and you should get a short warrantee, the junk yard is hit and miss.
