Personal opinion aside, the mechanical problem of making an automatic transmission that will handle the power output of a large motorcycle, cover the entire powerband well, yet fit in small package, has not yet been solved.

There is a company out there (US) that makes a fairly large bike with an auto tranny but I don't recall the name. It's far from over 1000 cc's I don't recall the name because it's quite an ugly beast. (And I can't recall the name since I don't want to get sued!)

Enter the following: Motorcycle with automatic transmission, in your search engine. You will find all kinds of interesting info and strange looking bikes. The tranny in an auto bike, not even close to 1000cc, is just plain ugly.

Now for my take on the subject. Nothing like a perfectly timed shift to make you smile. (I smile alot.) I've been shifting my own gears for about 30 years now, cage and two wheeler, and wouldn't stop if they were giving the bikes away for free. Part of the fun of riding. Besides, if it didn't take a bit of skill to operate a bike, we would have all kinds of short lived wacko's on the road with us.

If you don't have the coordination to operate a hand clutch and foot shifter when upshifting, and can't handle the same, AND the hand brake and foot brake when downshifting, you should not be on a bike period. And most definitely not on something 1,000 or larger.

v-belt autos have been around for a long time, mainly on sleds. There were a few cvt off-road bikes, the rokon and an arctic cat mini.
The cvt does make a lot more sense than a gear transmission- no shared oil with the engine and vastly reduced manufacturing cost. The only real downside is a lack of a manual clutch, which is not really an issue with road bikes.
The key to success in business is to give them what they want, not what they need.

Anybody who wants to ride a bike that big wouldn't want an automatic. If you can't shift a motorcycle, you've got no business wanting one.

i hope to god they never do, if you cannot learn to use a clutch and nshift gears you have no place near a motorcycle,

it is a very easy skill to learn if you cant you pretty much dont have the motor functions to do anything else assosiated with motorcycles.

yeah, as if the automatic transmission didn't already hurt the driving ability of the world enough as it is. I hope to god that never happens.

doubt it will reoccur......Honda tried this in the 1970s......it was a 750cc Honda matic......it was a flop.....no one wanted an automatic bike.....so they ceased production........don,t think they,ll make that mistake again.....but who know,s for sure.
