This is not a legal/illegal question. It depends on if your company allows you to take off. May be covered under Family Leave Act. I would discuss it with your employer.

Legally? Sure. You can take as many days off as you want to. It's not a question of law. If you take excessive days, you may lose your job. Some companies have a policy to allow you to take time off for such situations. Others are governed by the Family Emergency Medical Leave Act (FEMLA) that allows 12 weeks per year unpaid leave for medical purposes or family emergencies. There is paperwork that needs to be filed to perfect this. So check with your employer to find out if you qualify and what you need to do to protect yourself under the act. If you havent been there for a year and if the company doesnt have enough employees, the act may not apply to you.

Bottom line is that you can take time without FEMLA. But if you have no sick time or vacation, and if the absences are excessive, you could lose your job.

There is no legal right, but most companies have policies in place, to cover situations such as this.

You need to talk to your supervisor and HR to find out your companies policies.
