What ever is on your mind is planted in your brain, keep your mind on pleasant things, good things. Say a Prayer before you lay down to sleep. That helps me more than anything, read from the book of Psalms, It will uplift you and take the nightmares away.

Can't really get rid of them; they are more a reactive than proactive problem. When I have a bad one, I watch cartoons for a while until I can go back to sleep; works every time! Usually Flintstones, but sometimes a Disney classic.

Maybe listen to some relaxing music before you go to bed so that you feel calm and laid back. Or something that will set your mood, lighting some scented candles for example.
