this which country is rich thing is a bit complicated cos it depend on what you are looking at, even though i am not an economic student, i know you have to look at different thing like GDP, purchasing power purity and i think most importantly GDP per capita. The richest country is known to be Luxembourg (check the spelling) in the world but if you look where the USA is in the list, you wonder what determine the rich country.
Coming to your question, south Africa is the African economic power by far their GDP is almost two times that of Egypt but their GDP per ca pita is not number one in Africa. There are countries like equatorial guinea, Botswana. Namibia and some that have a relatively high GDP per ca pita than even many Asian and South American countries. However if you look at these countries overall GDP and budgets, it is low, so i will say it depend on what you want to look at. Things like population, poverty rate affects the wealth of many countries. I wonder if my ideas makes sense to you but i am sorry i have no much knowledge in this sector. ask me about chemicals, ha ha!

I would guess Mauritius and one of Cape Verde or Botswana. SA has by far the biggest economy, though, and the top richest persons of whom Harry Oppenheimer is the richest.
