Originally Hester was forced to wear the scarlet A to indicate her sin of adultery. Later the people of Boston came to think of her A as standing for "Able." Even later there were those who argued she was an "Angel."

Yes, the "A" in the book relates to the punishment imposed for committing the crime of Adultery and identifies Hester as guilty of that. During the time the book was written such actions were used as a fomr of punishment. In the book Hester was married although it was believed that her husband had dies at sea. Since there was no evidence of her husband's death, when she gave birth to another man's child, she was charged and found guilty of adultery. To indicate this she had to wear a red A on her clothing.
