Not looking for diagnosis, rang the doctors surgery for a prescription for cystitus, having had it before, I know the symptons, picked up prescription but also given a form for test for urinary tract infection - is it not one and the same?

Cystitis is either an infection or an inflammation of the bladder. A UTI covers the range of cystitis (infection of bladder), ureteristis (inf.of the ureter), or urethritis (inf. of the urethra). All of these conditions can have very similar symptoms and are treated the same way - with antibiotics.

So - to answer your question - yes, they are basically the same. The term UTI is more encompassing, cystitis is more specific.

Next time you think you might be developing a UTI - make sure you are well hydrated - lots of water and cranberry juice to flush out the urinary tract. Avoid sugary juices (i.e. orange & apple) and soft drinks. Always pee after sex or swimming. Always wipe front to back. You may already know these things but I've been repeatedly surprised when I list these for my female patients - and there's one or the other that they were never told about growing up.

Good luck!

Cystitis is inflammation and UTI is an infection. One can be treated with antibiotics the other you need to find the cause. Sometimes the inflammation is helped by anti inflammatory medication
