"You are either with us or against us." - Pres. George W. Bush, in a joint news conference with French President Jacques Chirac Nov. 6, 2001.
This quote should speak volumes about Bush's inability (or refusal) to put things in perspective and understand such complexities.

You mischaracterize philosophical realism and philosophical idealism. You seem to be referring to political realism and idealism, and as such this question should be in politics. Philosophical idealism is the view that existence is entirely mind-dependent, that is, that the only things that exist are ideas. Realism is the view that existence is mind-independent, that is, is an external world that persists and is the way it is whatever we think about it. Since one view says all existence is mind-dependent, and the other says all existence is mind independent, the only "middle ground" is substance dualism, the idea that the world of ideas and the world of physical things both exist. Descartes famously advocated this view, but it's so riddled with really serious conceptual problems that it's not taken widely taken seriously as a philosophical view. The reasons that it is not taken seriously are often rehashed in introduction to philosophy classes because they themselves are interesting issues.

No, clearly not. I don't think he even lives in this world at all. Actually,I have often wondered if his problem is he is just incredibly stupid, incredibly closed off from the real world, crazy, or just does not care and wants to keep padding his pockets and that of his cronies without concern for the common good.

he's making the same kind of political mistakes the soviets made, only in this case, it isn't the political philosophy that's too idealistic, its the assumption that much of the middle east is either ready or willing to accept democratic forms of self-governing

I think you need to look in the mirror and ask that question. The very fact that you and most liberals find it so easy to judge and put Bush in a nice little box shows who the true idealists are.
