Add HCl or some other mineral acid to sodium silicate solution, Na4SiO4. A white precipitate of SiO2 falls out. Filter it and heat to several hundred or a few thousand degC and use the dry white powder that results.

Na4SiO4 + 4HCl ===> 4NaCl + SiO2 + 2H2O

Sodium silicate solution is available commercially, called "water glass." It has been used to preserve eggs by coating the porous CaCO3 shell with a silicate "glass."

It's more convenient to buy silica gel from a lab supply house.

Just by some of that "crystal" cat litter, it is really just chunks of silica gel. Also, since the crystals are large, you don't have to worry about inhaling the silica dust.
