why do they always seem to group a certain kind of movies each year?

1998: diaster movies (Armegedon and Deep Impact

couple years ago: the main ones were Horror films

last year i think it was all sequels

this year a few new ideas plus sequels.

but it seems like usauly there one category... one year it migth be action movies, next year horror, next year romance, and so on.

people stick with what sales, right now, bringing the comics and older cartoons to the movies is the big thing, as long as something sales they will keep on making it

For an industry that is supposed to be engaged in a creative activity, Hollywood as a group is incredibly unimaginative. Maybe it's that at the decision making level only the individuals who play it same get to the top.
Fortunately there will always be independents, or those who are willing to buck the entrenched studio bureaucracy to do something different, creative or un-PC.

Mostly one studio sniffs out that another studio is doing a particular movie and decides to produce one to compete. After all, if only ONE type of movie is made - then that one movie will garner all the audience for that genre.

1-action
1-feelgood romance

it all depends on what the majority of the public wants. if a production company sees that disaster movies are selling good, that's what they'll make until the public wants something else.
