Yes, he can. If anyone knows this answer, its him. Just ask him about it.

No, not the way he's doing it. He is only entering the South Carolina primary, no other state. Technically of course anyone with enough (write-in) votes in the general election COULD win but realistically Colbert has 0 chance.

He himself has stated that his goal is to get 1 elector who will vote for him at the convention. He is not trying to win.

I'd be more inclined to vote for him than most of the real candidates if he were serious, but I don't think he is. He's just poking fun at the whole election process, and he's not the first comedian to do it. Pat Paulsen did it every four years from 1968 to 1996. See the link below.

On the local news they just said Colbert was raising fast in the polls with 28% of voters pulling for him , so I doubt it's a joke ....

Yes and no. He cannot realistically be nominated for president by running only in South Carolina. However, some states do not require their delegates to vote only for the person that their district voted for. So, yes, he could be nominated for president but in reality, he has a snowball's in hell. "Trying" to get elected as president is just a joke.

As far as I know, he is really going to run in the South Carolina primary. Anyone can become president if they want to. You have to associate with the party of your choice and it is up to the party to elect their own candidate to run. If you choose to still run after losing in the primary then you can run as an independant candidate which means that you basically have no supporters in government. You have to rely on the people to vote for you.

Nah... but he is hilarious making fun of the campaigns and the idiocy of the candidates saying and doing whatever it takes to get votes. Long live Stephen Colbert.

I think he has only entered in the South Carolina primary so far, so as a practical matter, he can't win unless he runs in a lot more states.

It's just comedy. He's only on the primary ballots in one state. Even if he wins that one state, he wouldn't have nearly enough delegates to win the nomination from either party.

But he's making the election season a lot more fun!

He's already president of b*tchslapping Bush at a public event. That's good enough for me.

He is trying to make a point about our politics today. Surprisingly enough, I think people would vote for him just because he is not a jackass politician!
