I'm getting my own apartment and I've decided to go to the animal shelter to adopt either a cat or dog so I won't be so lonely. If I'm going to get a dog I'm only going to get a small one, like a maltese or a palpion. I have a full time job and I'll be in an MCAT class so I'll be studying a lot. ANyone have any recommendations and why? I love both animals and I'll more than likely devote at least a half hour of playing with it a day.

Dog is better for many reasons, but can require more work like walking the dog. A dog is much more affectionate then a cat and is also good as a watch dog, even a small dog can make a good watch dog. The dog will alert you to noises, etc. Always nice if you live alone.

But regardless, cat or dog, you will need more then a half hour a day to devote to your pet. It is not fair to the animal unless you get 2 of them so they can play with each other. I have 2 dogs and believe it or not, it is less work having 2 of them.

Well, first of all, I think that it is great that you plan on adopting an animal. There are a lot of animals out there that need a good home. I would suggest that you get a cat due to the face that you seem very busy. A dog is definitely a lot more work than a cat. A cat is content to be left alone for large amount of time where as a dog needs more interaction and caring for

Hope this helps!

I suppose this would depend on how much time you have. A dog will need training so he listens and will need to be house broken if you plan on letting it in the house. You'll need to have a big enough yard to let him run in, if you have a small yard, you'll need to have at least 15 min. a day to dedicate to walking the dog. Whatever breed you choose will depend on how much energy the dog has and how much interaction it will need, and how much exercise. Some breeds require more than others. I f you have a small apartment with little or no yard I would suggest a cat. You'll need to littler box train it. Cats have their own way of exercising so you'll need to love it and feed it. It basically comes down to what you have time for. If you are going to be gone a lot of the time then I suggest a cat. If you go to work in the morning and come home at night then perhaps a dog. Dog's will need much more attention then a cat will require. Your choice. Since you won't be hom eall day unless you littler box train a dog, ten a cat is your best bet.

i would go with a cat until you move out of the apartment and are done studying. this way you can have a fave pet and not be lonely, and you'll also be able to devote more time (at least 2hrs) with a dog and be able to get the kind you want. if you live in an apartment and have a dog, you can only get a small one. me, i'd much rather have a large dog, like a lab or a doberman (my faves). also, cats don't bark and you will have a lot less trouble with the neighbors.

when you get your animal, make sure to spay or neuter as soon as they are old enough to avoid spraying, or other nasty smells.

A cat will look after itself, is ideal for an apartment and only really needs you to provide it food or water. The sleep most of the day.

A dog requires exercise, makes noise and overall needs more attention.

With a cat, you do not really get much back.

A dog, the more time you put into it, the more you get back.

In my opinion go for the cat - a dog requires too much work. If your studying and working - a cat will just sleep in the background.
A dog will need walking, attention etc etc..

Good luck with the chooosing!

I would go with a cat since they use the litter box and are happier spending all of their time indoors and do better when left alone during the day. Dogs make great pets but they require a lot more time than a half an hour a day. They need to walked at least twice a day and taken outside to go potty a lot more than that.

I love dogs and they require more than 1/2 hour of play a day. Cats can spend much more time alone. It's in their nature. A dog is more like a child and requires much more one on one activity. If you can't meet these needs you would proabley be better off with a cat.

Neither, even a cat needs more attention than a half hour a day. You do NOT have time for a cat or dog right now. Wait until you have more time. Since you love animals you should be able to understand why its cruel to leave even an independent animal alone for so long.

If you've only got a half hour a day to spend with a pet, maybe you should consider fish or a hermit crab. Cats and dogs both need way more attention than that. Both could cause a lot of problems being along that much a day.

You should get a cat because they are naturally low maintenance and they are easily trained unless its a stray cat or something. a dog is a lot harder because they take time to train and if youre going to be gone a lot you should get a cat because they dont do anything while dogs need lots of attention. they could even tear your house down if your not watching
