Frightened the life out of me! Stopped shaking now.

either your pressure relief valve opened,or your boiler section cracked.in that case you need a new boiler.

When you boil water on a pot, the bubbles that you see is water vapor that goes into the atmosphere. If you turn up the heat, the bubbles move rapidly. If you turn down the heat, the bubbles move less rapidly, and if you remove the heat, the bubbling stops. Your boiler is an enclosed container unlike your pot which is an open container that heats up your water. The water vapor is trapped in that container, and "wants" to get out into the atmosphere. The boiler builds up to much pressure because of to much heat, then KABLAM.
Next time, turn down the heat to a minimum, it will save you a lot of money on heating bills.

Your bypass valve didn't go off like it was suppose to. Every six months or so, you shouldn't have had the valve checked along with the rest of the stove. It's a hard lesson to learn, good think no one was hurt.

Mine caught fire inside ( internal combustion) the firemen said and now we have to get a new one. Moved into this house in March and nothing has gone right for us since and it is costing us a small fortune in repairs!
