When I first saw this it overwhelmed me with emotion.
Not many people will remember Paul Robeson that is why I have put it here in Senior Citizens, but this young lady must be very much familiar with his music to be able to do this so well.

Wow did i have a hard time getting back to your question after going to your link, then trying to find Paul Robeson singing it,live,so to speak.i've seen it in the movie,"Showboat".only found a home-made video.(See my question under the CATEGORY "yahoo answers).the reason i wanted to say hello is twofold:(1) this was the ONLY song my father sang,he had to be a little tipsy at a social gathering to do it and he did a DEAD-ON version of it! as you know, you have to be able to reach some incredibly LOW NOTES to pull it off, and he did!!and (2) i think you should re-word the question and put it in"arts and entertainment">"music" category so YOUNGER people could dig it, and they would, they would. hey, i'm 55 years old and i never go to "Senior Citizens", i didn't even know it existed!thanks for the memories!

Very long and far away memories, couldn't have told you the name, but the first time I heard the Song was as a darn young pup at a drive-in movie. Showboat was a powerful flick, but Mr Robeson really pulled tears with the old man of the river.

I remember Paul Robeson. He was in Sanders of the River. He had the most wonderful bass voice . Great great singer.

Paul Robeson is one of only two Americans whose mortal cremains are buried in the wall of the Kremlin in Moscow. The other is John Reid of Portland, Oregon.
Great voice. Sad political stance.

It's a very good mime but she's not singing it herself in my humble opinion.I remember Paul Robeson singing this when I was a young man.

I was taken aback at first, YouTube is like a box of chocolates sometimes, if you haven't seen the film before, you never know what you're gonna get.

I admire young kids who have old time favorites. I used to be like that. She was spot on too, that was great. Loved her deep passion.

Wonderful singer. I understand he regretted doing Saunders of the River after he saw the finished film. I would not be surprised if that was true he was the only good thing in it.
