In a strange sense your friend is right. We have global warming because the majority of the population thinks roughly on the level of cave men. Maybe a little below.
Proof that cave men were smarter: put anyone from our current population into a cave, give them stone tools and no clothe and see how long they would survive.

Global warmING is a natural cycle that has existed for as long as the Earth has.
Is man speeding it up? Maybe. We will never know for sure.
