Has anyone made this roadtrip in December? Any tips, recommended places to stay? Cautions? We don't mind a little cool weather and rain but does anyone know if attractions are open or busy around New Years? Thanks for the tips in advance!

all the state and national park is open, not busy, you can camp in the park.Driving along 101 and hwy1, you will see rugged coast and many cute village style towns, redwood empire and wild life, you can drive though the trunk.

Take a hotel coupn book in many attractions or rest areas, you can get around $50 in many hotels.

HI,
I take it you would like to visit the Redwoods National Park near Crescent City. All the National Parks are open this time of year as long as there is no snow. This place is right on the coast so I think snow is out of the question. Another place you might like to visit is Oregon Caves National Monument on Highway 199 at Cave Junction about 65 miles from the Redwoods.
You will run into very cool and rainy weather.
Places to stay: Crescent City Econo Lodge 707-464-6106,
Pacific Inn 707-464-9553 or Crescent City Travelodge 707-464-6124
In cave Junction we stayed at the Junction Inn 541-592-3106
Hope this helps....

Not sure if you're speaking of "Redwoods" in general or if you have something more specific in mind. In general - there are wonderful redwoods along the coast - Mendocino north to Oregon. Hotels and motels, restaurants, etc. are open but restaurants in smaller towns like Mendocino take turns being open because there is not enough business for all of them to warrant opening the doors every night. It's a wonderful time of the year to go - if you don't mind a little rain. Heavy rains can cause roads to be closed so always check CalTrans for road information before you go.

I drove around in that area, but it was not in December. I think the weather is pretty much the same in the Bay Area all year round so everything should be open when you go.

I think its mostly still open, mainly it will be rainy and cold and if you do a lot of hiking it may get kind of muddy.
