They are gold with i think wheat grass on one side, a hole in the middle, and on the other side there are japanese symbols around it.

What you are describing are current type Japanese 5 yen coins. Some of the earlier dates are worth a dollar or two, but most of the recent ones are worth 25 cents US or less.
Unfortunately, the dates are in Japanese characters on those.
If you have a good public library nearby, go see if they have a book called the "Standard Catalog of World Coins, 20th Century", published by Krause Publications. That book has coin values by date and a brief explanation on how to read the dates.

5 yen is about 4 US cents. Coins can only have more value than their face value if they are in PERFECT MINT SHINY condition.
