Turkey, Syria, Egypt - the Near East
Iraq, Persia - the Middle East
India, Malaya - the East
China, Japan - the Far East - Winston Churchill.
Now, however, the Middle East seems to have shifted westwards and the Near East not to exist much any more.

It was a vague sort of reference to countries (south of Russia) east of the Mediterranean but "near" England, which considered itself the center of the World (e.g., time zones based on Greenwich). The dividing line between Near and Far seemed to be India, roughly.
